Pilates exercises were developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. His original exercises were very strenuous and weren't suitable for most people. More recently, the exercises have been altered to make them relevant for a very wide population from unfit people through to elite athletes and for those with injuries, conditions and other problems. Today, Pilates is extensively taught across the world with devotees reporting a wide range of benefits. Pilates movements are initiated by first recruiting the "core muscles" to ensure controlled and correct movement patterns are followed.
